While there is no shortage of stunning spaces to get your Calgary fall fix, the peaceful beauty of a tree-lined street this time of year is a must-do. Aside from sheer splendor, canopy trees bring a host of other benefits to a neighbourhood, including shelter from the elements (hot and cold) for pedestrians and bikers, reductions in stormwater runoff and increased property values. Here are some areas in Calgary well-known for their tree-lined streets – definitely worth checking out at this time of year:

Sticking around Calgary for the long weekend? With sunny skies in the forecast and a plethora of Canada Day activities in store, this is a great weekend to stay put. Still looking for ideas for this weekend? We’ve rounded up a few for ya!

• Hit up Riverfront Avenue. The party starts at 10:00 am and wraps up with fireworks at 11:45 pm. Calgary sweethearts Tegan and Sara are just one of the acts on deck for the celebrations

• Go check out a big red ball. No, seriously. It’s 115 kilograms, it measures 4.5 meters in diameter, and it will be celebrating Canada Day in our fair city. This temporary art installation, dubbed the RedBall Project, has appeared in 30 cities worldwide since 2001. The big red ball will be gracing a different Calgary landmark each day leading up to Canada Day, when it will be having a ball (ha!) at Olympic Plaza

• Be part of a living flag at Fort Calgary between 11:00 am and 12:00 pm, and afterwards stick around for all sorts of kid-friendly activities including a petting zoo, craft tent and photo booth

• Celebrate Canada Day the old-fashioned way and hit Heritage Park. The first 2017 guests get a free pancake breakfast, and then the fun continues with live music, mini chuckwagon races, boat rides and more!

• In 2017 Canada turns 150….and Confederation Park turns 50! At 11:00 am, their 1967 time capsule will be opened (Beatles poster anyone?). Other fun stuff includes a pancake breakfast (of course), horse-drawn carriage rides, live entertainment and more family friendly activities

Canada turns 150 this year! And there is no shortage of ways to celebrate this exciting milestone. Outlined below are just a few of the ways in which proud Canadians can take part in the fun.

With shorter days, longer nights and colder weather, it can be more than tempting to stay warm and cozy indoors and relax on our fitness regimen a little (or a lot).
But why stay cooped up in your house when there are so many options for fun indoor and outdoor activities here in Calgary? Our city offers some of the widest variety of fitness opportunities in the country. Below are just some of the ways you can get out and active during the holidays!

1. Head to Calgary Olympic Park: http://www.winsport.ca/
Calgary Olympic Park’s year-round facility offers a plethora of both outdoor and indoor activities the whole family can enjoy!
• Get your skates and head to COPs indoor rink! Public drop-in skating is available seven days a week and the prices are great, ranging from $2.99 for children and seniors to just $5.99 for adults. They even have a family pass for $14.99, which includes two adults and children.
• Love sledding? COPs tube park is the largest of its kind in Western Canada, featuring 10 lanes, each 200 metres in length. It’s also located on the main hill so you can easily take advantage of nearby washrooms, eateries, retail store and other amenities.
• Of course if you’re looking for a local or beginner/intermediate place to go skiing and snowboarding with family and friends, COP is convenient and fun! The hill features a beginner area, a beginner park, a terrain park and even a super pipe!
• If you love hockey, COP has drop in shinny games every Tuesday as well as every other Friday. You just ned to be 18+, have all you own equipment and a helmet to play! They even host adult rec hockey if you’re looking for more of a team experience.
• If you’re more of the adventurous type, COP also has bobsleigh and luging!

2. Try Cross Country Skiing, Skating or Tobogganing
The city of Calgary has a host of great places to take your family for skiing, skating and tobogganing, no matter what side of the city you live in!

3. Head to the Mountains!
We are very lucky to be living so close to some of the most scenic mountain ranges in North America, and they also lend themselves to some great activities too!

Hiking and fall go hand in hand. The trails are quieter and more peaceful. The imagery is stunning. The air is crisp. And for those days when you don’t have the means to head to the mountains, there are a ton of fantastic urban hikes right within the Calgary city limits. Here is a list of our favorite local hikes:

1. Bowmont Park: take Silver Springs Boulevard to the end, and you’re at the edge of Bowmont Park. This off-leash hike offers spectacular views of the Bow River, and even includes a waterfall.
2. Edworthy Park: on the other side of the Bow River is Edworthy Park. This park has it all: playgrounds, picnic sites, a dog park….and of course, biking and hiking trails.
3. Fish Creek Park: Fish Creek Park has the honour of being the second largest urban park in Canada. With 80 kilometers of trails (30 of which are paved), there is no shortage of park to see. Fish Creek is also home to Sikome Lake, The Fish Creek Environmental Learning Centre, artisan gardens and the upscale dining establishment, The Ranch.
4. Nose Hill Park: Calgary’s largest municipal park, spanning more than 11 square kilometers and bordered by twelve residential communities, has no shortage of hiking trails. While the off-leash dog park sections of Nose Hill Park can get busy, the more remote areas of the park are often empty.
5. Weaselhead Flats: a former military training ground, the park was actually shut to the public following the 2013 floods upon the discovery of a number of undetonated explosives. The park has since been declared as safe by the Department of National Defence….however park visitors are instructed to call 9-1-1 if they see something that looks like an explosive. Explosives drama aside, this is a beautiful spot to spend a crisp fall day.

Well, the Stampede is over – we’ve enjoyed the deep fried Oreos, turkey legs and other unhealthy (but oh so delicious!) fair food, but now it’s time to get back into our regular workout schedule.

And what better time of year to be active? Calgary is beautiful in the summer, with a variety of activities for anyone to enjoy, whether it’s walking, running or biking through one of the city’s scenic parks or canoeing or swimming in a local lake. If you’re looking for some fun ways to get active and enjoy the summer months, read below for our list of the top 5 workouts to do this summer in Calgary.

1. Explore the Parks & Pathways

If you love the outdoors Calgary has a ton of options for you! The City of Calgary landscape boasts more than 8,000 hectares of parkland and natural areas and more than 15 local, provincial and natural environment parks for you to walk, hike or bike through regardless of what side of the city you’re on. For a full list of Calgary parks, the best thing to do is a Google search of “Calgary Parks.”

And of course you can always explore the rugged mountain trails in the outskirts of the city, whether it’s a quick trip to Elbow Falls, or heading to Kananaskis Country, Canmore and Banff National Park less than an hour’s drive away.

2. Be Adventurous

For more of an adventurous workout, be sure to head over to Winsport’s Canada Olympic Park (COP). During the summer you can bring your bike and try out their challenging mountain bike trails, get on the summer bobsleigh, go zip lining, get on their skyline luge and wrap it all up with some mini golfing with the family. If you’re looking to really workout the upper body, try your hand at rock at climbing inside or outside at the Calgary Climbing Centre or at the University of Calgary’s Outdoor Centre.

3. Enjoy the Water

Need to cool off? Whether you prefer an indoor or outdoor water workout, Calgary has you covered! The City of Calgary has more than a dozen indoor or outdoor swimming pools, and our city has some of the nicest rivers to go rafting or swimming in, such as the Elbow River or Lake Sicome. Of course you can always check out some of the gorgeous lakes and mountain scenery heading outside the city to spots such as Quarry Lake in Canmore, Johnson Lake in Banff or Herbert Lake in Lake Louise. If you’re not much of a swimmer but still like the water, try canoeing with the Bow Waters Canoe Club or rent a boat or take sailing lessons with the Glenmore Sailing School on the Glemore Reservoir.

4. Walk or Dance at a Festival

Calgary has a lively festival scene in the summer months. Whether you like walking and shopping or moving to the music, you won’t want to miss any of the great summer festivals coming up, such as the Calgary Fringe Festival July 29-August 6, Taste of Calgary in Eau Claire August 11-14, or Expo Latino August 5 & 6 in Prince’s Island Park. for a full list of festivals go to visitcalgary.com/things-to-do/festivals.

5. Go Running

If you really want to get your blood pumping, taking a run is a sure way to do it. Calgary has a very active running community, and why not? With the many choices in scenic parks and trails it’s one of the best places to get your cardio on! If you’re looking for a beautiful solo run head to Memorial Drive or Prince’s Island Park downtown, Fish Creek in the south or Nose Hill in the north. If you’re looking for fellow runners, check out The Running Club for your nearest location, look for a running group on MeetUp, or join a run or race happening every other week!

Tomorrow, June 4th, is National Health and Fitness Day!  Bill S-211, the National Health and Fitness Day Act was passed in December 2014, and the first National Health and Fitness Day was held last year!  National Health and Fitness Day is an initiative to make Canada the Fittest Nation on Earth!  Canadians are encouraged to mark the day by visiting their community centre, participating in a local event, heading to the park as a family, or simply going for a walk.  There is no shortage of fun ways to be active in Calgary.  Get Up, Get Out and Get Active!
