The tremendous benefits of exercise and active living are hard to ignore – from helping to maintain a healthy weight to increased energy to better sleep, the rationale for keeping fit is strong.  Starting a new routine can seem like a daunting prospect for fitness newbies.  The Mayo Clinic suggests these five steps to get started:

  1. Assess your fitness level
  2. Design your fitness program
  3. Assemble your equipment
  4. Get started by starting out slowly and building up gradually
  5. Monitor your progress

Specifically interested in starting an exercise program in Calgary?  Come out to YYCfit on May 13 & 14, 2017 to meet with Calgary’s finest fitness professionals and discuss how to best jump start your fitness routine.

April 10 – 16 is National Volunteer Week in Canada!  Volunteers are critical to sports and recreation organizations in Alberta.  Here are some interesting stats from the 2007 Giving and Volunteering for Sports & Recreation Organizations in Alberta survey:

  • Sports and recreation organizations comprise the largest component of the nonprofit sector in Alberta – 26% of the 20,000 organizations in Alberta
  • Two thirds of hours worked for sports and recreation organizations came from volunteers
  • 370,000 Albertans (13% of the population over the age of 15) volunteered for sports and recreation organizations in the year the study was conducted, for 43.5 million hours
  • Most common volunteer activities include organizing or supervising events (44%); coaching, refereeing or officiating (40%); fundraising (40%); or sitting on a board or committee (29%)

Make sure to take time this week to thank those volunteers working with your organization!
